Meet the Maker: Danielle Wolf of The Bear and Chickadee

Hi, I'm Danielle — and this is my story.

If you've ever held one of my prints and felt like it captured something you couldn't quite put into words — a quiet morning, the way light hits fresh snow, the sound of birds returning in spring — then you already understand what The Bear and Chickadee is all about.

I'm a Maine-based illustrator, crafter, and print & pattern designer. I'm also a mom of two, and honestly? Those two things are completely inseparable from my work.

Where the Name Comes From

The Bear and Chickadee isn't just a brand name — it's a love letter to my kids.

The Bear is my son, Jonah. The Chickadee is my daughter, Violet. They are my greatest inspiration, my most honest critics, and the reason I started making things that were meant to last.

When I became a mother, I found myself wanting to hold onto the small, fleeting moments — the ones that slip by so fast you almost miss them. A muddy boot by the door. A bird at the feeder on a grey February morning. The way the Atlantic looks in late October. I started drawing those moments, and somewhere along the way, other people started recognizing them too.

Life in Vacationland

Maine is more than a backdrop for my work — it's the whole palette. I draw from mid-winter flurries that quiet everything down, the first backyard birds of spring that feel like a promise kept, and the rugged Atlantic coastline that reminds you the world is bigger and older than any of your worries.

Living here means I'm constantly surrounded by texture, color, and the kind of beauty that doesn't ask for your attention — it just quietly exists. My job is to notice it, and then share it.

The Illustration Process

Every piece starts with observation. A walk. A window. A moment with my kids that I don't want to forget. I sketch loosely at first — just trying to capture the feeling, not the perfect image.

From there, I work in layers, building up color and texture until the piece feels alive. I'm drawn to the imperfect, the organic, the slightly-worn-in. I want my prints to feel like they've always belonged in your home — like they were made for that specific wall, that specific light.

I work from my studio in Maine, surrounded by reference books, dried botanicals, and approximately too many cups of coffee. My son and daughter make regular appearances. Sometimes they help. Sometimes they just eat my snacks.

Ordinary Moments, Extraordinary Keepsakes

The thing I hear most from customers is some version of: "This makes me smile." That's everything to me.

I believe the ordinary moments of our lives — the seasons changing, the birds coming back, the kids growing up too fast — deserve to be celebrated. Not in a grand, polished way, but in a real, textured, this-is-actually-what-life-looks-like way.

That's what I'm making when I sit down to illustrate. And that's what I hope you feel when you hang one of my prints on your wall.
